Get involved in the world’s largest volunteer event on behalf of the marine environment on 15th September 2009.

There were over 1000 Project AWARE banners flying high (or under the sea!) this year for the biggest cleanup on record. 287 events were held in Asia Pacific. 350,000 water-loving participants scoured shoreline and underwater environments in more than 100 countries around the world. International Cleanup Day takes place in September each year. Project AWARE Foundation coordinates the underwater clean up in partnership with the Ocean Conservancy who collect vital data on the number and types of debris found. This is a crucial part of the international effort to campaign for change. Project AWARE encourages clean up campaigns throughout the year, for advice or assistance.

Dive For Earth Day Makes Waves

Thousands of Project AWARE divers and community volunteers joined in the action during April’s Dive for Earth Day festivities. More than 235 Dive for Earth Day events took place in nearly 60 countries across the globe. From Thailand to Tanzania, China to Canada, Panama to Poland and everywhere in between – Dive for Earth Day was a resounding success.

Each year, during the week of 22 April, divers and water enthusiasts worldwide make a splash for water conservation in partnership with Project AWARE. This year, more than 100 of the 235 organized events consisted of shoreline and underwater cleanups where volunteers collected harmful aquatic debris by the ton. Coral reef monitoring, fish surveys and AWARE Kids activities were also well attended, representing nearly 100 events. Other global Dive for Earth Day festivities included shark monitoring, AWARE Coral Reef Conservation Specialty courses and environmental booths and conferences.

Why Dive for Earth Day? Underwater environments face a myriad of threats. Overfishing, habitat degradation, climate change and pollution are only a few issues pressuring these vast resources. Dive for Earth Day is a chance to do your part locally and focus attention on aquatic issues that are close to divers’ hearts.

Project AWARE appreciates all the hard work and dedication of Dive for Earth Day volunteers. If you missed out, plan to do your part and volunteer in your local area next April. And be sure to remember the environment each time you dive.

What is the International Year of the Reef?
2008 has been designated the International Year of the Reef by the International Coral Reef Initiative (ICRI). IYOR 2008 is a worldwide campaign to raise awareness about the value and importance of coral reefs and threats to their sustainability, and to motivate people to take action to protect them. All individuals, governments, corporations, schools and organizations are welcome and actively encouraged to participate in IYOR 2008.

IYOR 2008 Goals

Strengthen awareness about ecological, economic, social and cultural value of coral reefs and associated ecosystems;
Improve understanding of the critical threats to reefs and generate both practical and innovative solutions to reduce these threats;
Generate urgent action to develop and implement effective management strategies for conservation and sustainable use of these ecosystems.

Why is IYOR 2008 important?
Coral reefs are some of the oldest and most diverse ecosystems on the planet. They provide resources and services worth an estimated US$ 375 billion each year, a staggering amount for ecosystems that cover less than one percent of the earth’s surface. Millions of people and thousands of communities all over the world depend on coral reefs for food, storm protection, jobs, medicines, and recreational opportunities.
Unfortunately, many of the world’s coral reefs (including the associated seagrass beds and mangrove habitats) have been damaged or destroyed due to increasing human impacts, climate change, and other factors. According to the report “Status of Coral Reefs of the World: 2004”, 70% of the world’s coral reefs are threatened or destroyed, 20% of those are damaged beyond repair, and within the Caribbean alone, many coral reefs have lost 80% of coral species. The decline and loss of coral reef ecosystems has significant social, economic, and ecological impacts on people and communities around the world.

IYOR 2008 in Malaysia
Malaysia is part of The Coral Triangle, recognized as the region of the world’s oceans with the highest marine biodiversity. There is a need to manage our coral reefs in a sustainable and integrated manner, with active stakeholder involvement, while preserving the marine ecosystem based on sound science.
Malaysia will be an active participant in IYOR 2008. Initiatives to promote conservation action and strengthen long-term policies and legislation for coral reef conservation will be coordinated by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. Corporations, schools, communities and individuals are invited to participate. Anyone is welcome!

Pulau Tioman (Pulau is Malay for Island) is the largest island on the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. It is located in the South China Sea, approximately 32 km from Mersing, the closest mainland port. Measuring some 22 km long and 11 km at the widest point, the island has a total land area of 133.6 sq. km.

Tioman has beautiful beaches with surrounding marine areas. The landscape and the beauty of the island have attracted many tourists, locally as well as from abroad, and the island was once voted one of the 10 most beautiful in the world. In addition to fishing activities, tourism has become a very important income generating activity on the island. Many tourist facilities such as chalets, rest houses and hotels have been built, either by the state government or the private sector. While it is fair to say that development over the last 10 years has had some adverse impact on the islands' environment, it remains a beautiful and restful place.

It is the sea which attracts many visitors to Tioman, particularly divers, who come to enjoy the warm clear waters. The reefs around Tioman and the neighbouring islands, which radio-carbon dating shows are nearly 6,000 years old, have many varieties of coral and tropical reef fish, as well as larger species such as turtles and sharks. The rare giant clam is also found here.

Immortalised as the fictitious paradise Bali Hai in the 1960's box-office hit musical "South Pacific", many myths and legends surround the island. The most popular one holds that the island is a dragon. The high peaks at the south of the island are in fact:

the "Chula Naga" (dragon's horns) for is not Tioman the mighty dragon Sri Gumom, that formerly held its abode in Pahang, but which on its attempt to visit its sister, Gunong Linga, Sri Rama prohibited, and, changed into stone .. the dragon Sri Gumon fell into the deep sea the there remains

Whether it is the sandy beaches, the coral reefs, the pristine rainforest or the myths and legends of its past that attracts visitors, there is no doubt that Tioman is a jewel in the South China Sea.

This program lets you experience the basics of diving at the convenience of a local swimming pool. During this adventure, you'll master some of the basic concepts and scuba skills which would be helpful should you decide to pursue an experience in the open sea during your PADI Open Water Diver course.

Whether you watch the short PADI Discover Scuba video, or are briefed with the Discover Scuba Diving Flip Chart, you’ll enter the water ready for your scuba adventure. After you and your instructor strap on your scuba gear, you’ll have the chance to dive down to maximum 6 metres/20 feet.

To go on your Discover Scuba adventure, you must at least be 10 years or older and complete the Discover Scuba Statement (which includes a medical questionnaire).

Whether it's Kids ! Bring your parents diving ! For young adventurers like you, the Bubblemaker program is an introduction to the thrill of breathing underwater. If you're eight or nine years of age, now is your chance to take the plunge with a PADI Instructor and go pool diving.

Whether it’s a glass of milk, bubble gum or just being submerged beneath the surface, you can't help blowing bubbles ! So try blowing bubbles our way. Start out on the right fin, jump into the PADI Bubblemaker program today!

The children will learn to perform Scuba activities according to adult standards, with practical expectation for their age group. Participants will be taught basic knowledge and skills of scuba diving and they will enjoy the experience of breathing underwater under instructors' supervision.

Rescue Diver

The program is an important step in expanding your knowledge and experience as a diver. PADI Rescue Diver (or equivalent) certification is also a prerequisite for all PADI leadership programs.

How do you take a subject like accident prevention and management and turn it into fun? Call it the PADI Rescue Diver program!

The PADI Rescue Diver program develops your knowledge and skills so you can effectively perform diver assists and rescues, manage diving accident situations and render first aid.

To get into the PADI Rescue Diver program, you’ll need to be certified as a PADI Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) and must be at least 15 years old. The PADI Junior Rescue Diver program is available if you’re between the ages of 12 and 14 and hold a PADI Junior Advanced Open Water Diver (or equivalent) ratingYou'll also need to have successfully complete a sanctioned program in CPR & First Aid within the past three years. If you haven’t, check out the new Emergency First Response programs which are fun, easy & modular in design just like all PADI courses.

Upon Registration, participant will receive the Rescue Manual for self study. It will approximately take 7 to 8 hrs for the self study. Participants will have to complete all 5 knowledge reviews where you'll hand in to the PADI Instructor on the day of Lecture 1. The Rescue Final Exam will be administered on Lecture 2. Students are required to score at least 75% as a passing score. The PADI Instructor will then go through the specific mistakes. The passing criteria is MASTERY of diving knowledge.

STEP 3: OPEN SEA EVALUATION

The Open Sea Dives will be held over Friday till Sunday in Malaysia. This is to ensure that knowledge of the 12 required rescue exercises are of mastery level by the participant.

Throughout the course, you’ll learn fundamentals of scuba diving, including dive equipment and techniques. You will also earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification that is recognized worldwide. You earn this rating by completing five confined water and knowledge development modules and by making four open water ocean dives.

As a certified PADI Open Water Diver you have the freedom to dive with a buddy independent of a professional. If you already tried a PADI Discover Scuba Diving experience or are PADI Scuba Diver certified, check with your instructor to see how credit from these courses may apply to the open water program. Your underwater adventure can begin as soon as today. Open water learning options also include group or private instruction. This course offers tremendous flexibility and lets you work out individual needs with your instructor.

Virtually anyone who is in good health, reasonably fit, and comfortable in the water can earn a PADI Open Water Diver certification. At some point in the course, your PADI Instructor will ask you to demonstrate the ability to swim 200 meters/yards without swim aids or 300 meters/yards with mask, fins and snorkel and complete a bit of paperwork, to get you on your way. If you are between 10 and 14 or have a child between these ages, there is a PADI Junior Open Water Diver program available.

Students are required to score at least 75% as a passing score. The PADI Instructor will then go through the specific mistakes. The passing criteria is MASTERY of diving knowledge.

STEP 3: CONFINED WATER
The confined water session is to develop the skills required for safe diving.

STEP 4: OPEN SEA EVALUATION

Message from the dive resort:-

We are located off the tip of the birds head peninsula of Papua . We don’t really have a wet season here, in fact we don’t really have seasons being only 50km south of the equator. There is more rain to be expected in July, August and this is only rain during the night. It rarely rains during the day. From March – end of May there is little or no rain, smooth seas and good visibility. During July August we do have light winds which cause some surface chop but it does not interfere with diving. The best month for calm flat seas, good visibility and great weather is October, with November , December also very good. Diving is good all year round here with average of 20 metres visibility.
